Newington Green Action Group
The Newington Green Action Group (NGAG)
Registered UK Charity: 1087866
Main Aims
NGAG was formed in 1979, order to bring about the regeneration of historic Newington Green London N16 9PX through local community effort, in order to restore it to popular use as a natural focus for the area. First recorded in 1480 Newington Green is, over 500 years later, once again being used like a village green today, even though it lies within a very urban, inner city location.
Community Regeneration Projects
Whilst the basic physical regeneration of the area was completed at the end of 2005, the group is now working to ensure that the improvements are maintained and to encourage new developments that are of benefit to the whole community.
NGAG monitors planning applications and public transport, organise local events (planting, jazz on the Green, fairs etc), participate in various steering groups, including the local Neighbourhood Safer Streets Team and the Mildmay Festival Committee, liaise with the Council, link in with other organisations in the area, and come up with ideas to bring the community together.
Publications
NGAG published the award winning book, 'The Village That Changed The World. A History of Newington Green London N16' ~ by Alex Allardyce, 2008.
A series of four postcards of Newington Green, plus Christmas and seasonal cards have also been published.
National Awards
The Newington Green Action Group won the Green Flag Award (the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales) in 2006/7, 2007/8, 2008/9 and again for 2009/10. The group also won the Green Heritage Site Award (sponsored by English Heritage) in 2007, 2008 and 2009, when Newington Green was one of just 46 sites in the UK to be given this prestigious award.
